fall, Mike Huckabee taped an appearance on Kenneth Copeland’s
popular television show. The theme: “Integrity of Character.”
“Treat people like you’d want to be treated,”
Huckabee said. Now some are raising issue with Huckabee’s
character, principally his judgment, CBS News chief investigative
correspondent Armen Keteyian reports.
 They
are focusing on his association with the televangelist, who has
refused to cooperate with a Senate investigation into his ministry’s
finances. At issue, as reported by CBS News last week: whether
millions of dollars in tax-exempt church donations have been
used to bankroll a lavish lifestyle and a slew of private, for-profit
businesses.
- “Mr. Huckabee has terrible judgment because not only
is he being closely associated with someone under this ethical
cloud, but he’s refusing to distance himself,” said
Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility
and Ethics In Washington. When Huckabee appeared on Copleland’s
show, the evangelist said “Gov. Huckabee is not here in
any kind of political role.”
- After his appearance, like many guests, Huckabee stayed overnight
at the ministry’s lavish 18,000 square foot lakefront home.
“All I know is he’s a delightful human being,”
Huckabee said of Copeland. But, before the show aired, Grassley’s
probe went public. So Copeland went back to the ex-Arkansas governor
with an offering.
- “I said, ‘Governor, if this will negatively impact
your campaign in any way, I won’t run it,’” Copeland
said. “He hollered at me on the phone and said, ‘Are
you kidding me?’” CBS News has learned that Copeland’s
family has donated more than $29,000 to Huckabee’s campaign.
And just three weeks ago - when Huckabee was on the financial
ropes - Copeland helped raise thousands more from hundreds of
ministers attending a meeting at his West Texas headquarters.
Nobody is saying how much.

candidates whom I could support" - Huckabee and former Massachusetts

his own Muslim upbringing if the times will get tough- and they
will!

about the Russian soldier who burst into a hidden church service
and said to the several cringing people who were waiting to be
shot, “Any of you who will renounce Christ can leave now-
any who won’t renounce Christ will be shot!” The outcome:
The soldier was really a believer but he wanted all who would
sell out their brethren to be out the door! Then they all had
church! I guess Barak Obama has already made his position clear
on this one! Won’t Barak’s mention of the Muslims insult
the integrity of real Christians that just happen to be black?

Louis Farrakhan said Sunday that presidential candidate Barack
Obama is the ''hope of the entire world'' that the U.S. will

outrightly endorsed Obama but spent the majority of the nearly
two-hour speech praising the Illinois senator. Farrakhan also

at a Saviours' Day event in Detroit. He was recovering from complications
from prostate cancer and months earlier had ceded leadership

Says Reason To Believe Speech Violated Restrictions On Political
Activity By Non-Profit Groups
NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Feb 26, 2008 The IRS is investigating the United
Church of Christ over a speech Sen. Barack Obama gave at its
national meeting last year after he became a candidate for president,
the denomination said Tuesday. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, belongs
to the 1.2 million-member Protestant group through his Chicago
congregation. In a letter the denomination received Monday, the
IRS said "reasonable belief exists" that the circumstances
surrounding the speech violated restrictions on political activity
for tax-exempt organizations. The denomination has denied any
wrongdoing. Obama, a member of Trinity United Church of Christ,
spoke about faith and public life at the denomination's June
2007 General Synod in Hartford, Conn. The IRS said in the letter
that it was concerned about articles posted on the church's Web
site and on other sites stating that Obama had addressed nearly
10,000 people at the event. The agency also said Obama volunteers
had staffed campaign tables "outside the center to promote
his campaign." The Rev. J. Bennett Guess, a spokesman for
the Cleveland-based denomination, said a group of Obama volunteers
was outside the Hartford Civic Center, where the event took place,
but that they were told they could not enter the meeting. The
UCC had invited Obama to speak a year before he announced he
was running for president because of his involvement in the denomination,
Guess said. Church leaders consulted with lawyers before the
event on following IRS rules. Before Obama spoke, a top church
official told the crowd that the senator's talk was not a campaign-related
event and that no leaflets or other signs of political support
would be allowed. Nonprofits are barred from endorsing candidates
or providing support for campaigns, although groups are allowed
to invite candidates to address them and many do so. Guess said
no other presidential candidates were invited because Obama was
the only one active in the UCC. The Rev. John H. Thomas, president
of the denomination, called the inquiry "disturbing."
"When the invitation to an elected public official to speak
to the national meeting of his own church family is called into
question, it has a chilling effect on every religious community,"
Thomas said in a statement.
- Amy Brundage, an Obama spokeswoman, insisted the speech was
not a campaign event. In the address, Obama spoke about his personal
spiritual journey and had said that faith had been misused in
the past to divide Americans, partly because of the Christian
right. The IRS has stepped up its monitoring of the political
activity of nonprofit groups during the 2008 election. It is
more common for individual congregations to be targeted, not
entire denominations, but very large ministries have been investigated
in the past. The inquiries can take years. Punishments can range
from a financial penalty to loss of tax-exempt status -- an outcome

past record on such issues and said he would continue that record

- McCAIN HEDGES ON HAGEE ENDORSEMENT
MAR 1, 2008 - On Thursday John McCain welcomed the endorsement
of John Hagee, but a day later the Arizona senator sought to
maintain some distance from the evangelical leader after the
Catholic League and the Democratic National Committee called
on McCain to denounce his support, citing controversial remarks
Hagee has made in the past on a variety of subjects.
“Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for
president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend
for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all
of Pastor Hagee’s views, which I obviously do not,”
McCain said today in a statement, “I am hopeful that Catholics,
Protestants and all people of faith who share my vision for the

in no way an endorsement for John McCain because he too is a
major player in the New World Order. The real New World Order
is not even of this world. Now we all know about Dr. Jeremiah
Wright, former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ and
former pastor of Barack Obama. Many black churches were involved
from the 1950’s to the 1970’s civil rights movement
under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King and still today
most of these same churches are still challenging the remaining
vestiges of racial discrimination. However, most black churches
and ministers today are not to be identified with the same Black
Gospel espoused and declared by Dr. Wright.

at a U.S. congressman who said Muslim radicals would celebrate
Barack Hussein Obama's election. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) recently
said: "They'll be dancing in the streets because who his
father was and because of his posture that says, 'Pull out of
the Middle East. Pull out of this conflict.'" Only self-hating
Jews were offended by this statement. but not Muslim radicals.
Just recently Hamas indorsed Obama's candidacy.
Obama is not even true African-American: His biological father
was a Kenyan Muslim, who was raised by Muslim stepfather in Indonesia.
His family did not suffer from slavery and have not being experienced
racial discrimination throughout generations in US!
Some time ago Obama chose to be a member of the black racist
church, where his own mother would not be welcome. This church
propagates the racist ideology of scholars such as James Cone,
who said: "The task of black theology is to kill gods who
do not belong to the black community." This kind of racial
hate is propagated in Obama's church, but after 20 years membership
he pretends to know nothing even about the racist preaching of
his own spiritual mentor and friend, Rev. Jeremiah Wright who,
like Barack Obama, was a Muslim before 'converting' to Christianity.
(According to Muslim law, one is Muslim for life!) An old proverb
states: "Tell me who your friends and I shall know who you
are!"
Where his American patriotism is concerned, Obama does not wear
a flag lapel pin and did not bother to place his hand on his
heart when the American National Anthem was played. Is Obama
a racist, liar, fraudster or just another political chameleon?
It doesn't really matter. Neither qualifies him to hold position
of the President of the United States!
It is shocking to see that in the leading democracy of the world,
public is mesmerised by euphoria of fake political correctness
and is still believe in empty, demagogic political speeches.
Nobody wants to ask or even hear the answers to tough and valid
questions!
Is Obama Muslim? In January 1968, Obama was registered as a Muslim
at Jakarta's Roman Catholic Franciscus Assisi Primary School
under the name Barry Soetoro, whose stepfather worked for the
topography department of the Indonesian Army. Later Obama was
enrolled also as a Muslim in the Besuki Primary School, a public
school in Jakarta. Obama acknowledged in his autobiography studying
the Quran and describes the public school as "a Muslim school."
The Times' Nicholos Kristof wrote Obama recited, "with a
first-class [Arabic] accent," the opening lines of the Muslim
call to prayer, which Obama described as "one of the prettiest
sounds on Earth at sunset." Obama's brother Roy is certainly
a practicing Muslim. Obama, the presidential candidate, wrote
in his wedding book in 1992: "The person who made me proudest
of all was Roy… two years ago he decided to reassert his
African heritage. He converted to Islam, and has sworn off pork
and tobacco and alcohol." (Obama's religious affiliation
and upbringing must not be an issue during US presidential election!

- Ron Paul is still in the race and gaining support from delegates
every day. He came in second in Pennsylvania, but amazingly,
after Ron Paul supporters managed to get a rule changed, which
positions them for more national convention delegate slots than
previously expected, the Nevada GOP abruptly cancelled their
own state convention and left.

10 hours at the convention, were prevented from casting their
votes.
- "After a super-majority of Ron Paul supporters captured
control of the Republican state convention Saturday, state party
officials abruptly canceled the event without electing delegates

Congress when assembled. Fits right in with the government being
a private corporation and the Department is not a treasury any
longer just called a department of treasury when there is no
treasury. Now ask yourself this, when they abolished the real
US Treasury, how can a Department exist that calls
itself "department of treasury" when Treasury no longer

When a box sized like a kitchen fridge can contain 47 million

While expressing concerns about China's runaway growth rate and
what he described as overvalued stocks, Greenspan played down
the prospect that Chinese authorities would sell Treasuries in
earnest, forcing a sharp spike in U.S. interest rates. Asked
at a commercial real estate conference if investors should be
worried about this oft-cited concern, Greenspan said: "I
wouldn't be, no."
- Still, Greenspan said the reason such a withdrawal was unlikely
was that China would not have anyone to sell the securities to,
hardly the sort of comfort jittery bond investors were seeking.
U.S. government debt has been under severe pressure over the
past week, with yields rising sharply on anxiety over the likelihood
that global credit conditions would tighten as the year progresses.
Bond prices move inversely to yields. Greenspan reinforced the
nervousness, saying that a global liquidity boom which he traced
back to the end of the Cold War would not go on forever. "Enjoy

THE DOLLAR'S RESERVE CURRENCY ROLE IS DRAWING TO AN END

- It is difficult to know where Bush has accomplished the most
destruction, the Iraqi economy or the US economy.
- In the current issue of Manufacturing & Technology News,
Washington economist Charles McMillion observes that seven years
of Bush has seen the federal debt increase by two-thirds while
US household debt doubled.
- This massive Keynesian stimulus produced pitiful economic
results. Median real income has declined. The labor force participation
rate has declined. Job growth has been pathetic, with 28 percent
of the new jobs being in the government sector. All the new private
sector jobs are accounted for by private education and health
care bureaucracies, bars and restaurants. Three and a quarter
million manufacturing jobs and a half-million supervisory jobs
were lost. The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen to the
level of 65 years ago.
- This is the profile of a Third World economy.
- The "new economy" has been running a trade deficit
in advanced technology products since 2002. The US trade deficit
in manufactured goods dwarfs the US trade deficit in oil. The
US does not earn enough to pay its import bill, and it doesn't
save enough to finance the government's budget deficit.
- To finance its deficits, America looks to the kindness of
foreigners to continue to accept the outpouring of dollars and
dollar-denominated debt.
- The dollars are accepted, because the dollar is the world's
reserve currency.
- At the meeting of the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland,
last week, billionaire currency trader George Soros warned that
the dollar's reserve currency role was drawing to an end: "The
current crisis is not only the bust that follows the housing
boom, it's basically the end of a 60-year period of continuing
credit expansion based on the dollar as the reserve currency.
Now the rest of the world is increasingly unwilling to accumulate
dollars."
- If the world is unwilling to continue to accumulate dollars,
the US will not be able to finance its trade deficit or its budget
deficit. As both are seriously out of balance, the implication
is for yet more decline in the dollar's exchange value and a
sharp rise in prices.
- Economists have romanticized globalism, taking delight in
the myriad of foreign components in US brand name products. This
is fine for a country whose trade is in balance or whose currency
has the reserve currency role. It is a terrible dependency for
a country such as the US that has been busy at work offshoring
its economy while destroying the exchange value of its currency.
- As the dollar sheds value and loses its privileged position
as reserve currency, US living standards will take a serious
knock.
- If the US government cannot balance its budget by cutting
its spending or by raising taxes, the day when it can no longer
borrow will see the government paying its bills by printing money
like a Third World banana republic. Inflation and more exchange
rate depreciation will be the order of the day.

- On Monday Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent
out an e-mail to supporters saying that "the McCain campaign
is bragging that they are out-raising and out-spending us."
It wasn't technically untrue: The McCain campaign was getting
that message out there — but it turns out that in June,
Obama vastly outraised his rival. Though the McCain campaign
reported $22 million in fund-raising for last month, the Obama
campaign just announced that its total was $52 million.
The average donation was $68 dollars, which means the total was
reached by a mix of large and very small contributions. This
may not mean that the financial advantage is now Obama's, however.
The RNC had about $67.8 million on hand at the end of the month
of June, and independent groups are sure to further muddy the

At this same speech, he promised to withhold funds from school
districts that don't make their junior high and high schoolers
serve 50 hours a year. 100 hours for college students, provided
their type of service is deemed acceptable by a sprawling new
Federal bureaucracy.

- Most Americans respect the laws while raising their children
to do the same, yet they are aware of millions in our country
who violate not only immigration laws but virtually every law
that exists. Americans notice the unscrupulous businesses that
hire them and the government agencies that cater to them at a
great expense. Our officials are charged with the responsibility
of oversight and have failed to do so on a scale unimaginable.
It's obvious our officials have allowed this problem to grow.
Government agencies and lobbyist have a convenient history of
under-estimating statistics and costs. If an automatic "path
to citizenship" (i.e., Amnesty) is offered, government leaders
will quickly realize there are significantly more than 10-11
million in the country--in fact, there are more than 20 million.
This would also be an offense to the millions of honest immigrants
who have become citizens through the established legal process.
The opportunity to live and work in America must remain an invited
and controlled privilege, not to be gained by backdoor tactics.

- PROBLEMS IN BLOOD DRUG LEAD TO HALT BY FACTORY
GARDINER HARRIS - February 12, 2008 - A major maker of heparin,
a blood thinner used widely in surgery and dialysis, has stopped
making it after hundreds of patients reported severe allergic
reactions to the drug, which is made from pig intestines. At
least four people died.
- Shortages of the drug are all but certain, federal regulators
said. Although alternatives exist, doctors warned of serious
consequences if heparin became truly scarce. “Inadequate
heparin would cause a health care crisis in this country,”
said Dr. Daniel Coyne, a professor of medicine at Washington
University in St. Louis.
- Public health officials first noticed a problem late last
year in four children undergoing dialysis at a hospital in Missouri.
Within minutes of being injected with heparin, the children experienced
serious allergic reactions. As officials investigated, they found
a total of 350 reports of patients’ experiencing problems
after being injected with large doses of heparin made by Baxter
Healthcare. Baxter supplies about half the nation’s heparin.
Most of the cases were reported in late December or January;
40 percent were deemed serious.
- The reactions included difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting,
excessive sweating and rapidly falling blood pressure that in
some cases led to life-threatening shock. A spokeswoman for Baxter,
Erin M. Gardiner, said the company had not changed its heparin
manufacturing for several years. The company initially recalled
nine lots of the drug, but problems continued. Baxter suspended
manufacturing multidose vials that have been associated with
most of the problems. Baxter continues to make single-dose vials.

Alcohol abuse causes over 100,000 deaths in the United States
and Canada each year. It is the drug most commonly abused by
children ages 12 to 17. Alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents
are the leading cause of death in teenagers. People who drink
alcohol are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behavior,
have poor grades or job performance, use tobacco products, and
experiment with illegal drugs. Alcohol and drug use may be an
unconscious attempt at self-treatment for another problem, such
as depression.
- You have an alcohol problem if your use of alcohol interferes
with your health or daily living. You develop alcoholism if you
physically or emotionally depend on alcohol to get you through
your day.
- Long-term heavy drinking damages the liver, nervous system,
heart, and brain. It also can lead to high blood pressure, stomach
problems, medicine interactions, sexual problems, osteoporosis,
and cancer. Alcohol abuse can also lead to violence, accidents,
social isolation, jail or prison time, and difficulties at work
and home.
- Symptoms of an alcohol problem include personality changes,
blackouts, drinking more and more for the same "high,"
and denial of the problem. A person with an alcohol problem may
gulp or sneak drinks, drink alone or early in the morning, and
suffer from the shakes. He or she may also have family, school,
or work problems or get in trouble with the law because of drinking.
- The use of alcohol with medicines or illegal drugs may increase
the effects of each.
- Alcohol abuse patterns vary. Some people get drunk every
day; others drink large amounts of alcohol at specific times,
such as on the weekend. It is common for someone with an alcohol
or drug problem to call in sick for work on Monday or Friday.
He or she may complain of having a virus or the flu. Others may
be sober for long periods and then go on a drinking binge that
lasts for weeks or months.
- Someone with alcohol dependence may suffer serious withdrawal
symptoms, such as trembling, delusions, hallucinations, and sweating,
if he or she stops drinking suddenly ("cold turkey").
Once alcohol dependence develops, it becomes very difficult to
stop drinking without outside help. Medical detoxification may
be needed.
- Drugs
Drug abuse includes the use of illegal drugs—such as marijuana,
methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin, or other "street drugs"—and
the abuse of legal prescription and nonprescription drugs. Some
people use drugs to get a "high" or to relieve stress
and emotional problems.
- Drugs like ecstasy (MDMA), ketamine, GHB, Rohypnol, and LSD,
which are known as "club drugs," may be found at all-night
dances, raves, trances, or clubs. Club drug use accounts for
increasing numbers of drug overdoses and emergency room visits.
Inhalants like nitrous oxide may also be used at these clubs.
Drugs come in different forms and can be used in different ways.
They can be smoked, snorted, inhaled, taken as pills, put in
liquids or food, put in the rectum or the vagina, or injected
with a needle. Teens and young adults may be at risk for becoming
victims of sexual assault or violent behavior in situations where
these drugs are used.
- Some nonprescription medicines, such as cold medicines that
have dextromethorphan as an ingredient, are being abused by teens
and young adults as a way to get a "high."
- In the United States and Canada, approximately 40% of adults
will use an illegal drug at some time during their lives. This
does not include the use of alcohol or prescription medicines.
Many people abuse more than one illegal substance at a time.
- Drug dependence or addiction occurs when you develop a physical
or emotional "need" for a drug. You are unable to control
your use of a drug despite the negative impact it has on your
life. You may not be aware that you have become dependent on
a drug until you try to stop taking it. Drug withdrawal can cause
uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms. The usual treatment

issued a new setback to the Bush administration on the treatment
of terrorism suspects yesterday, declaring that the only accused
"enemy combatant" apprehended and held on U.S. soil
can petition a civilian court to review the evidence against
him.
- Interrogation of Detainee Released - At the same time, the
divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit affirmed the
president's wartime power to hold accused combatants apprehended
in the United States without trial, reversing a previous ruling
by a panel of its own judges. The Justice Department hailed that
part of the decision, saying it preserved "a vital tool
in protecting the nation." A spokesman said it recognized
"the president's authority to capture and detain al-Qaeda

- The twin 5 to 4 rulings are the latest development in the
lengthy and complex legal struggle between the White House and
the courts over the constitutional rights of Ali Saleh Kahlah
al-Marri, a Qatari who, according to his own account, arrived
with his family in the United States on Sept. 10, 2001, to pursue
a master's degree.
- Arrested in December 2001 and labeled a sleeper agent for
al-Qaeda by President Bush, Marri has been held under harsh conditions
in a military brig on Bush's direct order since 2003. His detention
has included months of mostly solitary confinement that his lawyers
say has left him mentally unstable.
- Jonathan Hafetz, who represents Marri, said that in ordering
a new hearing on the basis for Marri's detention, the court's
majority had significantly rejected the "president's most
sweeping claims of unchecked and unreviewable executive detention
power." But he said that victory was tempered by a ruling
that "effectively allows the president to seize any person
in the United States, a citizen or noncitizen, and detain them
indefinitely without trial."

of all, the right to be charged and tried if suspected of wrongdoing,"
said Hafetz, who added that he is reviewing the opinion to determine

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- On the eve of one of her top diplomats' meeting
with an Iranian official, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
said the United States is sticking to its policy that Iran must
suspend its nuclear program before negotiations can proceed.

- She said the meeting that Undersecretary William Burns will
join Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland, with European officials
and Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, is "in
fact a strong signal to the entire world that we have been very
serious about this diplomacy and we will remain very serious
about this diplomacy."
- But, Rice said, "it should be very clear to everyone
the United States has a condition for the beginning of negotiations
with Iran and that condition remains the verifiable suspension
of Iran's enrichment and reprocessing activities.
- "Iran is a difficult and dangerous state, and it is
a state that is pursuing policies that are dangerous to our friends
and dangerous to international peace and stability, particularly
its support for terrorism and its pursuit of this nuclear technology
that could lead to a nuclear weapon," she said. "But
we have been very clear that any country can change course. The
United States doesn't have any permanent enemies." Watch

- Iran says its nuclear program is strictly to produce energy
and defends its right to proceed with enrichment.
- Rice expected to meet with North Korea counterpart
- Unlike Iran, the U.S. has engaged in diplomatic negotiations
with North Korea over its nuclear program, and Rice may embark
on a new relationship next week if she meets with her North Korean
counterpart in Singapore.
- North Korea has agreed to dismantle its nuclear program and
recently destroyed the cooling tower at its nuclear facility
at Yongbyon.
- "I can't speak exactly to what the interaction and interplay
might be among all the different ministers," State Department
spokesman Sean McCormack said. McCormack said he anticipated
what he called an informal ministerial meeting.
- McCormack declined to say whether the decision to sit down
with North Korea and Iran signaled a new Bush administration
willingness to reach out to U.S. foes. He said meetings with
the North Koreans and Iranians had been conducted previously,
although at a lower level.
- "We take these decisions because we think they are effective
in moving diplomacy forward," McCormack added. "What
I would read it as is the United States is looking for opportunities
to advance diplomacy, to push advantages where they see them
and furthering our national interests."
- Rice predicts 'bright future' for Kosovo
- On Friday, Rice also addressed another diplomatic hot spot,
Kosovo, pledging ongoing support for the newly minted nation
as its leaders visited Washington for the first time as elected
officials.
- Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February, prompting
violent protests.
- "The people of Kosovo have a long road ahead to build
their multi-ethnic democracy, but if the first few months are
any indication, they have the will and the dedication and the
commitment and the skill to do so," Rice said.
- "And as they do so, they will have a strong friend in
the United States of America. I think the future of Kosovo will
be very bright."
- Rice said she was swearing in the first U.S. ambassador to
Kosovo, Tina Kaidanow, on Friday afternoon.
- Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, who made the trip with Prime
Minister Hashim Thaci, expressed his country's gratitude.
- "This is a historic occasion," he said, adding
that the goal of the Kosovo government is to create a "country
of peace and stability."
- Kosovo's declaration of independence caused the collapse
of Serbia's fragile ruling coalition and a political stalemate
between pro-European Union and nationalist groups. For many Serbs,
the idea of forging closer links with Western powers that supported
Kosovo's breakaway amounted to treachery.
- Serbia still considers Kosovo a province and has refused
to recognize its self-declared status.
- Rice said that more than 40 countries, including more than
two-thirds of the EU and NATO and a majority of U.N. Security
Council members, have recognized the new state.
- Russia, Serbia and China have not recognized Kosovo's declaration
of independence.
- Spain has expressed concern that the recognition will give
momentum to secessionist movements in other countries, such as
the Basques in northern Spain.

- COVER COMEDY: NEW YORKER CARTOON FALLS FLAT ON FACE

Yorker magazine cover. (AP / NEW YORKER) MAN AND BOY, I’ve
loved The New Yorker for more than half a century. I’ve
loved it under all five of its editors, and in each of the nine
cities where I’ve lived. For more than 80 years, it has
been the world’s best weekly dispenser of wit and intelligence
in print.
- That’s why I found its July 21 cover so painful.
- It’s a cartoon that shows Barack Obama wearing traditional
Muslim garb. He and his wife Michelle are bumping fists. With
an Afro hairstyle, machine gun and ammunition belt, she looks
like a 70s-era Black Power militant. They are in the Oval Office
and, beneath a portrait of Osama bin Laden, the American flag
burns in a fireplace.
- The cartoon satirizes the right-wing loonies and raging racists
who’ve been trying to make Americans believe an atrocious
lie: that Obama is a Muslim agent of al-Qaeda and, once in power,
will murder the entire United States of America. Trouble is,
not everyone gets the magazine’s joke.
- No matter how superior New York liberals feel their intellect
is, Jake Tapper of ABC News says, they should not assume that
just because the magazine is "mocking such ridiculousness,
the illustration won’t feed into the same beast in e-mails
and other media. It’s a recruitment poster for the right-wing."
- Rachel Sklar, a Toronto-born staffer at Huffington Post,
an Internet newspaper, says the cartoon has "all the scare
tactics and misinformation that have so far been used to derail
Barack Obama’s campaign — all in one handy illustration.
Anyone who’s tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who’s
tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary
out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism
— well, here’s your image."
- "I get the intended joke," says American novelist
Trey Ellis, "but dressing up the perhaps next president
of the United States as the new millennium equivalent of Adolf
Hitler is just gross and dumb."
- Bob Cesca, who wrote the forthcoming book, One Nation Under
Fear, believes that, even before the cartoon appeared, the spreading
of the Obama-is-a-terrorist rumour put the candidate and his
family "at risk of being targeted by an unhinged far-right
zealot who has ‘Kill ’em, and let God sort them out’
tattooed across his forehead."
- Now, however, "any given yokel will see the cover —
as it’s aired around the clock on cable news — and
think, ‘Hey Jessup! Lookie yonder! This here drawing shows
Hoo-Sane is a Muslin terrrrst. I knew it!’ "
- "Negative images burn their way into the consciousness
of voters in ways that cannot be erased by facts," Jonathan
Altar argues in Newsweek. "With one visual move, the magazine
undid months of pro-Obama coverage in its pages."
- A New Yorker press release carefully explains that on the
July 21 cover artist Barry Blitz "satirizes the use of scare
tactics and misinformation in the presidential election to derail
Barack Obama’s campaign."
- After the cover ignited explosions of outrage among Obama
supporters, editor David Remnick declared, "Satire is what
we do, and it is meant to bring things out in the open, to hold
up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful and the absurd. And that’s
the spirt of this cover."

- BANK FAILURES RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT DEPOSIT INSURANCE
July. 20, 2008 - There's nothing like news coverage of anxious
customers camped outside a bank to get people interested in deposit
insurance. Yet that's what happened in the wake of the IndyMac
Bank failure. Most people don't have to worry about deposit insurance
since they keep less than $100,000 at any one bank. When that's
the case, you're covered. Things get trickier for people who
stash more than $100,000 at any one institution. These people
can stretch their coverage if they have IRAs or other retirement
accounts ($250,000 in coverage per depositor per banking company),
or if they use living trusts or payable-on-death titling arrangements,
which offer protection for each named beneficiary. Jointly held
accounts provide still more coverage, since each person's shares
in joint accounts held at the same bank are added together and
qualify for a separate $100,000.
- If in doubt, it's smart to split big deposits among banks
- or at least read the deposit insurance rules at www.fdic.gov,
the Web site run by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
- At any rate, readers have been sending in questions on deposit
insurance. Here are answers to a few:
- Question: When a bank fails, how long does it take to get
your money from the FDIC?
- Answer: The short answer is that insured depositors have
immediate access to funds through check-writing, ATM withdrawals,
debit cards and the like, even before a failed bank reopens for
business.
- On uninsured funds, the FDIC cautions that payments can take
longer - perhaps a week, a month or longer. Also, customers with
uninsured deposits might need to provide documentation. Plus,
at least some uninsured deposits might never be paid.
- Q: Are depositors covered beyond the limit of $100,000 if
using a living trust?
- A: Generally, yes. Trusts usually provide $100,000 in coverage
per named beneficiary. The FDIC notes that trusts can be complex
and suggests customers check with banks about details. Similar
coverage is available for payable-on-death accounts, another
type of instrument that can be used to avoid probate in estate
planning. These protections are a good reason to make sure your
list of beneficiaries is up to date.
- Q: I'm concerned about the number of businesses that have
millions of dollars in accounts because it's not practical for
them to open 20, 30 or more accounts.
- A: You can split your money among a virtually unlimited number
of banks to augment coverage. But if you don't want to deal with
all that, consider a service offered by Promontory Interfinancial
Network (www.promnetwork.com). The company spreads large deposits
among different banks in its network, but customers get a single
statement and deal only with their home bank. Customers can access
up to $50 million in FDIC coverage.
- Q: Is deposit insurance similar to that provided for banks
also available to credit-union customers?
- A: Yes. These customers are covered up to $100,000 per institution
(with higher amounts for retirement accounts and so on) through
an insurance fund administered by the National Credit Union Administration,
a federal agency. Like the FDIC fund, the credit union version
ultimately is backed by the U.S. government.
- Credit unions haven't been making many headlines lately,
which is probably good. The Credit Union National Association
claims credit unions on average have slightly better capital
positions than banks, with mortgage delinquencies for the first
quarter below 1 percent. According to CUNA, most credit unions
offer mortgages but haven't been hit nearly as hard by the subprime
crisis, partly because they lend more conservatively and tend
to hang onto their loans.
- Q: I understand the FDIC insurance limits for banks, but
how are accounts at brokerages like Merrill Lynch and Charles
Schwab insured?
- A: The Securities Investors Protection Corp. provides limited
coverage for investors, but it's not as comprehensive as that
offered to bank customers by the FDIC. Specifically, SIPC, which
was created by Congress, works to restore investor cash and securities
that turn up missing when a brokerage fails or experiences other
financial distress. But it doesn't cover fraud, and it doesn't
protect against market losses. SIPC "does not offer to investors
the same blanket protection that the (FDIC) provides to bank
customers," the firm states on its Web site, www.sipc.org.
